(More customer reviews)As a flute player and a musical lover, I was thrilled to discover that (for once), a musical composer had created a music book for the flute, and not just a vocal and piano selection, as I usually find. This book includes all of the shows great songs, all in solo format. I was not very dissapointed in what I discovered when I finally got the book.
There are a few alterations to the songs-mostly the same alterations done for the vocal/piano book. For instance, "Thank Goodness" is cut down to Glinda's solo, "I Couldn't Be Happier", and "As Long As Your Mine" is displayed as a solo. There were also a few changes in the note scheme; which, for the most part, were unnessisary. The only real dissapointment I had with the book was the fact that Elphaba's famous solo, and my personal favorite song, "Defying Gravity", indured some major changes of notes and octaves, and was no longer the same song I love. But for the most part, the book remains faithful to the original score.
As for the accompaniment CD: it includes a full imstumental of backround music (not just the piano), which is very useful for a performance. It also includes a sort of "guide along" flute part in the music, which I personally do not like. I does not give you much freedom in playing the song if you are no longer a beginner flute player and wish to express your own style. However, if you are a beginner flute player, or don't know the songs that well, I suppose it would be useful. But for me, who knows all the songs by heart, it's rather unnessisary; so for the most part I don't use the CD. I should also note that on the CD, the beginning of the song "Popular" is played at full tempo, and not slowed down as I usually see it performed; another reason I don't use the CD.
All in all, this is a very useful book for playing around while having fun, and also learning some of your favorite songs in the process. I recommend the book more then the CD; but I think your likeness all depends on your level and style of flute playing. It also depends on how much you know and love the musical: Wicked lovers might be dissapointed by the changes to the songs if they're expecting the music to be exactly the same as on the CD. But if you're willing to work with a little change, I'm sure people will find that having this book can be a lot of fun.
